Welcome to Hampden-Sydney College Golf & Tennis Camp 

Join us for an unforgettable experience where golf and tennis enthusiasts come together to elevate their skills and create lasting memories. Our well-rounded schedule ensures a perfect blend of training, competition, and fun. 

As a camper you will embark on an unforgettable adventure while on the historic campus of Hampden-Sydney College, the 10th oldest college in America, founded in 1776! Camp registration includes collegiate level instruction, housing and meals. All skill levels are welcome including beginner all the way up to tournament level, ages 12-18. Check out the details below for an immersive and enriching camp experience! 

Daily Highlights:
 

Sunday, campers will dive into an exhilarating first day at camp! Check-in and dorm settling kick off the afternoon, paving the way for an engaging orientation, icebreaker activities and campus tour. Next will be a tennis introduction, followed by a dinner. As the sun sets, the camp comes alive with night activities such as pickleball, cornhole, spike ball, and more. Lights out marks the end of a fantastic start, setting the stage for a fun filled week!  

During Monday and Tuesday, our campers will experience a dynamic blend of group and individualized instruction. H-SC Head Tennis Coach Byron Balkin and staff will be honing the campers' skills on the college courts, while H-SC Head Golf Coach Duncan Wheeler and staff will be coaching campers at The Manor Golf Course, just 5 minutes away from campus. After a refreshing lunch break, the groups will seamlessly switch between these two fantastic sports, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging experience for every camper.  

Wednesday brings an exciting culmination as our campers put their newfound skills to the test, playing a full 18 holes of golf. Our enthusiastic staff will be there every step of the way, cheering them on, providing valuable instruction, and ensuring a fantastic day complete with lunch at the course. 

Thursday amps up the thrill as campers engage in a tennis team tournament at the Hampden-Sydney College Tennis Courts. Coached in their matches on tactics, campers will enjoy the day filled with competition and team comradery. The week wraps up with a camp award ceremony, celebrating the achievements and memorable moments of an incredible week at camp. It's the perfect ending to a wonderful week of fun, learning, and sportsmanship! 
 
Daily Golf & Tennis Instructional Details 

Campers will receive personalized golf & tennis instruction from Coach Wheeler and Coach Balkin in their respective sports at Hampden-Sydney College & The Manor Golf Course – Home of Hampden-Sydney Golf 

Monday: 

  • Golf Focus: Short Game & Wedges 
    • Campers will engage in focused instruction and drills, primarily utilizing the short game area and employing wedges on the driving range.  
  • Tennis Focus:  
    • Campers will engage in focused instruction on tennis groundstrokes, volleys, and serves incorporating technique, drills and games.  

Tuesday:
 

  • Golf Focus: Irons & Woods 
    • Campers will spend most of their time on the driving range, honing their full swings with irons and woods. 
  • Tennis Focus:  
    • Building on Monday's focus on stroke development, we will integrate these techniques into singles and doubles strategy and introduce match play while continuing to enhance and refine their skills.  
Wednesday: 
Camp Golf Tournament  
  • Campers will play a full 18 holes of golf while receiving course management coaching from Coach Wheeler and his staff. 
  • Talant Show

Thursday:
 
Team Tennis Tournament 
  • Campers will be placed on teams where they will play a mixture of doubles and singles in a team formatted event with Coach Byron Balkin and his staff coaching them along the way.

  • Answer: Yes, our dedicated staff ensures 24/7 supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of all campers. 
  • What is the check-in and check-out process?

  • What should campers bring with them? 
  • Answer: A comprehensive packing list will be provided, including essentials such as bedding, toiletries, and appropriate clothing for various activities.

  • Answer: Yes, transportation is arranged for off-campus activities, ensuring a seamless and secure experience for all campers. 
  • What happens in case of an emergency or medical issue? 
  • Answer: We have trained medical staff on-site during the day, and a local medical facility is readily accessible at night. Campers will be supervised 24/7 by staff. Parents will be promptly notified in case of any emergency. 
  • Are there any restrictions or guidelines for electronic devices? 
  • Answer: We encourage campers to disconnect and fully engage in the camp experience. It is recommended that electronic device use be limited some activities. 
  • Can campers request roommates? 
  • Answer: Yes, campers can request roommates. If campers do not have a request, they will be paired up based on various factors, including age and compatibility. 
  • How are dietary restrictions or allergies addressed? 
  • Answer: Our dining services team is well-equipped to handle dietary restrictions and allergies. Please provide this information during registration so that we can make the necessary arrangements. 
  • What recreational facilities are available on the college campus? 
  • Answer: The college campus offers a range of recreational facilities, including sports fields, a gymnasium, and outdoor spaces for various activities and pool.  
  • How are disciplinary issues handled? 
  • Answer: Our camp has clear and fair disciplinary policies in place, focusing on fostering a positive and inclusive environment. Parents will be informed of any significant issues, and appropriate actions will be taken. No drugs or alcohol of any kind will be tolerated. Campers will be sent home immediately with no refund if any are found.
